Found: undescribed larva! - Eleates depressus

Found: undescribed larva! - Eleates depressus
Jefferson Notch area, Coos County, New Hampshire, USA
Size: about 5 mm
I found this larva Sept. 3, 2007 in a Fomitopsis pinicola conk to which I had introduced a couple of adults that I found under another conk of the same species May 12, 2007. Kojun Kanda said he thought the larvae of this species had never been described. This one has affinities with the larvae of other subfamily members Bolito*phagus cort*icola and Boli*totherus co*rnutus.

This find is one of the byproducts of my Search for Pyth*o st*rictus on and near Mt. Washington.

Cool find, Jim.
I can't imagine how it's like to realize there's a critter that's new to science, right under your nose! What a fascinating discovery.

Thanks, Stephen.
I found more larvae and some more adults in the conk this evening. One of the larvae appears ready to pupate. I will be posting images sometime soon. Kojun says this is not only a first for the larvae but for host association as well (makes sense).
