Catalpa Sphinx caterpillar (midstage) - Ceratomia catalpae

Catalpa Sphinx caterpillar (midstage) - Ceratomia catalpae
Palmyra Cove Nature Park, Palmyra NJ, Burlington County, New Jersey, USA
July 27, 2007
I saw a mass of eggs first, then a large number of these caterpillars. It took me a while to identify them as Catalpa Sphinx moth caterpillars. It seems that we have had an irruption of them this year as many catalpa trees are nearly stripped bare at Palmyra Cove. However, I've noticed as of last week that almost all of the caterpillars ready to pupate have been parasitized by Apanteles congregatus, with upward of 100+ egg sacs on a single caterpillar.
