Horse Fly? - Efferia

Horse Fly? - Efferia
Moab, Grand County, Utah, USA
September 2, 2007
Size: 20mm
These things were the bane of my childhood! I must have been bitten hundreds of times as a kid, hiking up and down Mill Creek in Moab. Is this a proper horse fly, or a similar but different species?

Efferia
Species in the big group out west. Likely in the Nerax group. These don't bite human trail hikers.

Fly
This appears to be a Robberfly (female, I think). No idea of species or even genus though, sorry.
Steve
