larinoides (?) molting - Larinioides patagiatus - male

larinoides (?) molting - Larinioides patagiatus - Male
Brossard, Quebec, Canada
September 2, 2007
Size: 6-7mm
This is- I think- a Lariniodes but I don't know what kind. During the day it remained in a web retreat and came out at sunset to sit in a very loose unstructured web. After two days it molted - I only caught the final stage- and then it went back into the retreat for one day, after which he left, hopefully to find a mate. Here, although rather small, the shape of the palps is quite well outlined. Interestingly the retreat was immediately occupied by a second spider (probably a running ground spider). This is an image soon after he molted.

Great catch!
I've never caught a spider in any stage of molt.

thanks
I was kind of happy about it, but it would have been nice to have got there a bit earlier to catch it in action.
