seems like I should at least know the family, but alas, I don't.

Family is easy - Araneidae
Gender is easy too - male.
But then we're stumped. Is it Araneus or Larinioides? Chad will know!

I'm flattered
by the Balaban's confidence but these males sometimes drive me nuts as well. I suspect this is a male A. marmoreus, admittedly an individual with subtle markings.
