This brightly colored grasshopper was found on Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge, 12 miles east of Roswell, New Mexico. Bitter Lake NWR is located in SE New Mexico and contains multi-habitats. This is where the Great Plains meets the Chihuahua Desert, and where east meets west. The area was a shallow ocean twice, last time about a million years ago. There are many sink holes whose waters range from fresh to far saltier (gypsum salts) than the ocean. Each sink hole is its own unique habitat. Even though it is about 800 miles from the Gulf Coast the dragonfly, Seaside Dragonlet (Erythrodiplax berenice) is found here, along with a number of neotropical dragonflies and damselflies. The occasional critter from Mexico finds its way up the Pecos River to Bitter Lake. This refuge is home to a number of plant and animal rare, threaten and endangered species.
