Apical gall, zigzag goldenrod - Asphondylia

Apical gall, zigzag goldenrod - Asphondylia
Dunning's Spring, Winneshiek County, Iowa, USA
On zigzag goldenrod, Solidago flexicaulis

This is the first of two galls I've run across this season that appear to involve a partnership between an insect and a symbiotic fungus. The other is here:

Same deal, in both cases: a white matrix containing numerous small black spheres, each with one little larva inside folded in half. (I can't imagine how pupation works when you're folded in half!)

How fascinating that such a particular relationship could evolve.

Rearing in progress

Ruler units are sixteenths of an inch
