Moth - Noctua pronuba
47.630446N 52.687431W (WGS84), Logy Bay, Northeast Avalon, Newfoundland/Labrador, Canada
September 8, 2007
Size: 3 cm nose to wing tips
I noticed this moth on the wooden deck of our patio while I was BBQing today. Here it's hanging from one of the railing posts where I had moved it for some of the photos. The temperature was 14 Celsius. The high had been 21 Celsius earlier in the day. I was surprised to see this moth 'out' when it had gotten so cool. It seemed very lethargic and would not fly even after I had it crawl onto my hand. Incidentally, where do the insects go at night when the weather begins to get cool but the days are still warm? Did this moth miss-calculate getting 'home' in time?
