Hoverflies are so pretty and diverse . I noticed that someone in Illinois posted the same type which I just have found in my yard , so I thought that I would post mine as well since California is a long ways away from Illinois . Thanks for any help in his i.d. , sincerely Beth

These are a bit of a problem
What you have is either Eupeodes or Syrphus. Since a sample in hand is needed to be positive which is which, they're usually IDed here to tribe, i.e. Syrphini.

Now, if memory serves, the one from Illinois is a different story. Note that the top abdomen stripe on yours has a gap in the middle, while theirs is unbroken.
