Mantis - Mantis religiosa

Mantis - Mantis religiosa
Meridian, Ada County, Idaho, USA

Mantis religiosa
An adult, most likely female. I couldn't tell you what the dark abdominal markings are.

Mantis religiosa
Thank you. Maybe the dark marks just differentiate between individuals?

Markings
This species isn't normally marked in this way, they are typically pretty uniformly marked. These appear to be some kind of perforation/wound. They may be the insect's spiracles which have become infected/inflamed.

Mantis religiosa
All the pictures of insects etc. that I post are from my yard, which I try to tailor for the bugs and birds. Is there something I could, or maybe should, do to help insure better health for all involved... realizing that many prey on each other (as do many of the birds I attract.
