Small Minnow Mayfly - Callibaetis pretiosus - female

Small Minnow Mayfly - Callibaetis pretiosus - Female
Groton, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, USA
September 7, 2007

Moved
Moved from Callibaetis.

Callibaetis
Although the darker 7th tergite is just barely discernable on this dark female, the undulating border of the vitta (compared to the more ragged appearance of most ferrugineus females), and single marginal intercalaries (usually double through the middle of the wing in ferrugineus) help to reinforce the ID.

C. pretiosus is an interesting species. Not only do the marginal intercalaries vary from single to double among specimens, but it appears to be the only Callibaetis species where the number and distribution of cross veins varies significantly from male to female (few in the males, and more in the females).
