Jacose Sallow? - Feralia jocosa

Jacose Sallow? - Feralia jocosa
Barkhamsted, Litchfield County, Connecticut, USA
April 6, 2005
Size: less than a inch, I think
I believe this is a Jacose Sallow. The closest one that matched up, to me.

Joker
They have enough photos of this bad boy in the Guide. And some excellent shots, I might add. Dave P.

Seen one!
Seen one though at the time I didn't know what it was called. And why is it a bad boy? Do the caterpillars destroy trees or some other kind of plant?

Wrong Guide Page
Not that I'm an expert but I agree with you and Bob that this is The Joker. It's ended up on the wrong guide page. It should be on the page for Feralia jocosa .

Jocose or Major Sallow?
Dave, check out this page by Tony Thomas at MPG which compares Confusing Species of Feralia and see what you think. Based on James Adams' photos shown at the top of that page I would call your moth the Major Sallow, Feralia major. BUT.... if your moth is F. major it would be the first photo that I've seen of that species, from Maryland northward, that does not display evidence of melanism. Otherwise I would call it Feralia jocosa, The Joker or Jocose Sallow. But it is a very tough call and I am uncertain.

Sallow
Yes, I see how confusing these are. They said it is best ID'ed by hind wings. I like this photo at the Mullberry Wing. http://www.hmana.org/mulberry/mow/mow301.htm. It's real close. Dave P.

It's Extremely Close......
.... to Steve Walter's example, and I would defer judgement to Steve any day. 10005 - The Joker (Jocose Sallow).
