Banded Hickory Borer - Knulliana cincta

Banded Hickory Borer - Knulliana cincta
Hwy 55 and Sedwick, Durham County, North Carolina, USA
April 4, 2005
Size: 25 mm
Note the long, silky pubescence. Composite shows the spines on thorax, apex (tip) of elytra, and legs (femora). These are mentioned as distinguishing features in field guides. (1) (2) The bold pattern on the elytra is quite distinctive as well, but may be absent. See caption to Mike Boone's photo below on both these characters.

Very cool!
Patrick, this is great! You SHOW users exactly what characters to look for. Perfect. This is a nice combination of "in situ" images plus "specimen" type close-ups.

Thanks
Thanks for the compliment, Eric. I have a couple more ideas for composites like that. I enjoy playing with Photoshop, and occasionally the results are good. What was really helpful with that series is my Canon ring flash--it gives nice, even lighting when very close. (Not so good for shots from a distance--you get those annoying ring highlights.)
