Thanks for your help. I was thinking about that species, but don't have too much experience with these yet. What's the queen doing out and about?

 
I'm no expert, but I believe
I'm no expert, but I believe the 'queen' plays a different role than bees and ants, where it's just a dominant female. This is probably a fertile female that is in preparation to overwinter and be a queen next year.

Yes...
at the end of the season, next years queens come out to prepare for hibernation.
