6-Spotted Tiger Beetle? - Cicindela sexguttata

6-Spotted Tiger Beetle? - Cicindela sexguttata
Carderock, Montgomery County, Virginia, USA
September 8, 2007
Sadly, this guy was found deceased on the hiking path, but it was still so pretty I had to take some shots and figure out what it is. I thought 6-spotted tiger beetles were only green, but I now see photos in the Guide that are blue as well. Is that what this is? I don't see them noted after July in the info.

C. sexguttata
When specimens die and dry out quickly they often become much more blue/violet then they were in life. See how the head is still a greenish color? The entire beetle probably looked just like that before it died (It's extremely rare in that part of the country to see a live sexguttata that is part one color and part another).

And you're right that sexguttata is rarely out in the fall. They were known to have a fall diapause where only an extremely small fraction of the population would ever emerge. Interestingly, in the past five years or so they seem to fairly regularly emerge in the fall in larger numbers, even though this never used to happen. - Dan

Thanks for the reply -
interesting information! I didn't realize the carapace could change color under any circumstance. I'll be keeping my eye out for more tiger beetles in that area.

... I just read your bio here - very cool! I can totally understand such a fascination with these insects, even if I don't understand all the lingo you used. ;-)
