Baby Face Nelson - Stenopogon - female

Baby Face Nelson - Stenopogon - Female
Riley Wilderness Park, Coto De Caza, Orange County, California, USA
September 10, 2007
Looks like a hairy dude seen last year - same park - chowing down on a fly. Does this one have a moth?

Moved
Moved from Robber Flies.

Looks like
A large skipper has passed on. Stenopogon in CA are essentially hopeless beyond genus. (For this easterner anyway.) You are in the wonderland for that genus. In fact, you are in the wonderland of all robber flies with essentially 500 species in your area. That is just ungodly. This one does have an impressive amount of hairiness on the dorsal thorax.

This is a female and looks a bit different from your former male brevi.

Thanks, Herschel.
I'll move it to genus. Probably drought-related, there's a large difference in the size of skippers this year.
