Flower Fly?

Flower Fly?
Moore State Park, Paxton, Worcester County, Massachusetts, USA

It looks vaguely similar to genus Temnostoma in my insect book.

Flower Fly? Flower Fly?

Definitely a syrphid aka flower fly aka hover fly
I'm not up on eastern species, but Temnostoma looks promising. What I find distinctive here is the shading in the wing.

Another good possibility is Eristalis. You may want to look at images or use the Browse tab here: http://bugguide.net/node/view/7182/bgimage

Disclaimer: I'm no expert, but I do appreciate syrphids.

Hard for me to tell
It is similar to Eristalis dimidiata as well as some in Temnostoma. I can't tell the difference, or more accurately I can't tell which differences are significant. I left the image in subfamily Eristalinae. Next time I'll work on clearer wing veins.

It is a tough one
You've put it in a good place. The more I look at it, the more I think Eristalis. I didn't follow up on these names, but you may want to. I ran across them in another post:

E. siptaor
E. hirta
