Washington meadowhawk - Sympetrum semicinctum Richards Rd, Just W. of Prosser, Benton County, Washington, USA July 4, 2007 Size: WS 40mm
In the month of July, thousands of these meadowhawks can be found hunting and perching within approximately 1/2 acre on our land. As we build up a diverse population of insects on our flower farm, the dragonfly populations skyrocket, too. Literally, every little stick and flower bud has a perching dragonfly or two on it for a 2-3 week period each summer, and clouds of them float around us as we walk through the gardens. I assume they're breeding in the irrigation ditch that runs behind our property. An odanatists dream!
