Onthophagus - male

Onthophagus - Male
Patagonia Mountains, Santa Cruz County, Arizona, USA
June 25, 2010
Size: 5 mm
This is an unidentified specimen from the NCSU Insect Museum collected by W.D. Merritt. I am having trouble with the Howden and Cartwright key as this specimen appears to display a mixture of characters. O. knulli would be the best fit for geography, but that species apparently lacks margins around large pronotal punctures (this one has them, i.e. annular) and does not have smaller pronotal punctures (which this has). Also the pygidium is not quite right.
