In the guide
I just looked in your Kaufman guide and found a clearly recognizable picture of this guy on page 201. No idea how I missed it originally.

Thanks. Marshall's giant guide to northeastern insects shows a different member of genus Platydracus which looks much different to me.

 
I found mine in the road, too.

While I'm not familiar with rove beetles, many insects look really different at the genus level.
