All the others in the guide are from the southwest. This little girl must be lost:-)

 
Actually...
the revision of this genus states that they are an "uncommon but widespread species." The only state record for the NE seems to be Pennsylvania. Also the revision states that the northern form is supposed to be the yellow form like the ones posted from the SW by Louis. The color variation that you found, Tom, is said to be found from Virginia to Florida, so maybe this one is lost. Either way, this girl was a great find. The image is very nice, so it's a great addition to the guide.

Very nice
This appears to be an adult female P. pius. They look very much like clarus but have no basal band. The cardinalis seem to always have the chevron markings on the abdomen. Also, cardinalis look as though they're wearing a mask across the anterior eyes.
