Blue-Eyed Darner - Rhionaeschna multicolor - male

Blue-Eyed Darner - Rhionaeschna multicolor - Male
Sweeney Ridge, San Bruno, San Mateo County, California, USA
September 2, 2007
Size: ~6.9 cm
This was a very tired male, found high on a windy ridge. He was so cooperative! I was able to hold him in my hands and lap while spending at least a half an hour photographing, reading, keying, and carefully checking all the details of the descriptions for Aeshna multicolor in the (delightful!) field guide "Dragonflies and Damselflies of California"(1) by Tim Manolis. Took care to carry him down off the ridge & place him in a nice sheltered locale near water afterwards :-)

Note: Apparently, the genus name has been changed to Rhionaeschna since the 2003 publication date of "Dragonflies and Damselflies of California"(1).
