Spider - Neoscona crucifera

Spider - Neoscona crucifera
Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota, USA
September 16, 2007
Size: approx. 1/2 to 3/4in body
Maybe a Barn spider or Orb Weaver? Looks to be an adult female. We also saw a much smaller one (in a different area of the yard), maybe 1/4 inch or so that we didn't get any pictures of.

Check in the guide there and see what you think.

Well...
That is what I am thinking, but I don't know anything about spiders, so I didn't know if the Neoscona Crucifera and Barn spider were the same or not. A lot of my search was bringing up pictures of, what looked like, the same spider. The underside of the spider looks exactly like the Barn Spider on Wikipedia.org

Araneus
Araneus possibly ? cat face?

It
is a Neoscona.

Nice shot.
Lovely image regardless of the identity of the subject:-) It is really difficult to get orb weavers to genus even, so don't despair.
