Eristalis transversa ?? - Eristalis arbustorum - Female
Aromas, San Benito County, California, USA
September 18, 2007
Size: ~12mm
Saw this guy today in our garden, (live oak/chaparral habitat), he was there before lunch and allowed numerous photos, and he returned after lunch for more photos. My best guess is Eristalis transversa.

Moved from Eristalis.

I've shot one like that.
We call it Unidentified Hover Fly #1:

You have more and better shots than when I posted, and I wish you luck. I think the "third species" answer is the correct one.

(FYI, the E. transversa posts here are heavily concentrated in the east, with none closer to us than Oklahoma. From the photos, the yellow is very vibrant.)

Thanks yet again Ron
This guy was really cooperative, I must have shot 50+ frames of him.

Eristalis sp. ... female
I think E. arbustorum is a better match than the yellower E. transversa. But this could be another third species still.

E. arbustorum
As you guessed, it is E. arbustorum.

Thank you Richard & Jeff
for the ID, I'll move it to the proper page.

Thank you Richard
I've added a head-on view that might help narrow down the ID.
