Gravid
Wow, is that female gravid!

I don't recall seeing this species around here in West Virginia, too bad, as it is an attractive one.

Lots in NC right now too
I had a couple on my back deck yesterday, 4/9/05 here in Durham. They really seem to emerge all at once, and they seem to have mating on their minds--I've not seen them on flowers or anything. I think they are associated with decomposing logs, but any additional observations would be useful for the guide.

Observations
This pair was on an azalea, which has not flowered yet. I was photographing the female, who was sitting rather motionless on one of the leaves, when the male landed close by. Earlier the male had been flying around the general area for quite a while, perhaps because of some pheromone released by the female. Eventually the two coupled and remained that way for hours. I also spotted a third beetle, probably another male, scurrying around nearby shrub.
