Color-change reference -
In case you haven't seen it: Ohio Odonata Society .
Wasn't sure about gender at first, but then noticed the spine-tipped cerci in the enlarged second photograph.
By the way, these are the only dragonflies I saw at Huntington Central Park recently (restlessly patrolling males, and a couple flying in tandem), while hoping to find the (stray?) Turquoise-tipped Darner observed by John Avise.

Might be temperature
I've seen references to color variation in this species due to cool temperatures.

Interesting point.
The shots were taken on a cold day, immediately after rather lengthy - for here - rain. Additionally, I'm thinking teneral on this specimen, due in part to the non-veined look in the wings and, on top of that, rather lame flying.

I saw a ton of these odes today, but didn't get a decent look at any of them. (If the cause is temperature, I'd guess we'll see more of the same.)
