American Snout - Libytheana carinenta

American Snout - Libytheana carinenta
Greenwood County, South Carolina, USA
March 29, 2005
I chased this active butterfly around my yard and it landed in a muddy area. ID based on comparison with Peterson's Butterflies (1) and other images here at BugGuide. I have a pair of so-so shots which show the detail of the upperside of the wings...contact me if there's interest.

American Snout
Nice photo. I saw my first Snout about two months ago and was only able to get a profile shot. Good enough to make an identification. Unlike your photo, my Snout didn't have it forward wings up enough to reveal any color. Good job!
