unknown ant - Linepithema humile
Aromas, San Benito County, California, USA
September 23, 2007
Size: ~3mm
Saw these guys running up and down the branches of Baccharis pilularis, any chance of IDing to species or even just to genus?

Formicinae.
Great image! The least I can do is get you to a subfamily: Formicinae, as indicated by the single node on the pedicel that connects the thorax to the abdomen. Appears clear and conical (tooth-like) in this image.

Oops! Argentine Ant (Linepithema humile) - worker
A member of the Dolichoderinae (Odorous Ants), despite the scallow-like node on the pedicel. In fact, most Odorous Ants do have one, Tapinoma and Technomyrmex being the most notable exceptions. Only four urotergites visible dorsally are the hallmark vs 5-segmented gaster of Formicinae.
I agree this picture is a great one. It could almost lead one to find this odious creature beautiful!
