Seems a bit Lubber-like.

I would say [i]Melanoplus biv
I would say Melanoplus bivittatus, the two-striped grasshopper. females can be pretty large and slow-moving. I've seen many females toward the end of summer into autumn that are almost completely lacking wings. The males aren't too gentle about their lovin' and in the process, the females' wings can be damaged. At least, that's what my observations have indicated.

I agree.
I agree with the ID, and want to compliment Chad on the outstanding observations and explanation. Lastly, M. bivittatus is incredibly variable. Their colors may also fade a bit as they age and darken, making the 'stripes' more difficult to discern.
