Found wandering uphill from the river, out on the pathway. About 10am, overcast day.

Most definitely
This is D. gloriosa, a very nice specimen and photo.

I did not know Dasymutilla were solitary and there was nothing edible that I could see.

 
Dasymutilla
They lay their eggs on bee larvae and pupae. As adults they often feed on nectar from flowers.
