Trimerotropis modesta - male - female

Trimerotropis modesta - Male Female
Onion Saddle, Chiricahua Mountians, Cochise County, Arizona, USA
July 31, 2007
This species is very similar and closely related to Spharagemon campestris. The main difference is in color pattern of the body and tegmina. This species is more of a southwestern mountain hopper, often in open woodland areas, while T. campestris is a more northern species of grasslands. Occasionally the two come together, and I suspect (???) might sometimes hybridize. This species should be in the same genus as T. campestris, whether that be Spharagemon or Trimerotropis (they are sort of on the fence between the two). It is even possible that the two represent regional variants of the same species.
