Photos from the last gathering (Minnesota 2007)

Do we need this category?

An "Issues and Techniques of Identification" category has been added to the bottom of the Taxonomy page of Arthropods.

In my opinion, the place to put information about identification is in the Identification section of the appropriate Guide page(s). For example, ID characteristics of a species, genus, family, etc. should be placed in the Identification section on the Info page of that species, genus, family, etc. (and info that explains how to distinguish similar taxa from the present taxon should be placed in the See Also section on the Info page).

If someone wants to write about tips or methods for doing things, they could start an Article in the Forums area of BugGuide.

Since there are already designated places in the Guide to put this material, I don't think we need to create new places. Therefore, I suggest removing the "Issues and Techniques of Identification" category from the Guide (and incorporating its contents elsewhere if desired). Also see comments here and here.

Done
I returned the 5 photos to their previous locations in the Guide, and then removed the node.

Another thing
There have been a proliferation of categories under "Taxonomy Page for Arthropods". I am talking about: Contributors, Gatherings, Creatures not covered by the guide, Hawaiian spiders (and also Adalbert Colorado images, somewhere else).
I wonder whether it would make more sense to put them all under one heading such as "Odds and Ends" or a similar title. I don't like the way that page looks right now.

I agree
I noticed that category and forgot to bring it up. I agree that it should be deleted.

agree as well
Yes, I think that purpose would be better served by writing articles on the different groups. There could then be links to the articles in guide pages as need be.

I also think "BugGuide Gatherings" could be moved to a subcategory of "Photos of BugGuide Contributors". That will get rid of one extra category at the top level.

Now I'm feeling a little guilty about introducing the glossary at the top level, but I will say I feel that is important enough that it should be there, and that it makes more sense to put it there. (It is already way to complex to be an article.)

Bugguide gatherings
I like the idea of moving this one under Contributors, but I don't know how to do it. Can you?

Tag and move
I think you can just go to taxonomy, tag it, and move it. It's a big move, however, and did not want to do it without consensus.

Problem is, it is hard to test this sort of thing--one just has to try it.

We will join the consensus!
It would be good to move the Gathering images to a page under the photos of contributors. We like the suggestion!

And we would go one further on Glossary. It should have a tab on this page and every page. Right now people need to know to click on Guide before they can access it. We don't find that very intuitive. It should have a tab right up at the top! Nice work to all of you who have helped create that glossary.

One question on the glossary and glossary type images. Should we gather all those together in one place? There are three or four pages of glossary that have images. There are glossary type images on the base insecta page and one that we know of on the lepidoptera page. Seems like it would be helpful to have those all together since the glossary info pages can link to them wherever they are.

Just ran into another on the
Araneomorphae page

Glossary image/illustration placement
If an illustration, or other image, that is used for the glossary, can be assigned to a specific taxonomic guide page, I have been putting it under images there, but marking it non-representative. For instance, this one:

goes under Epicauta vittata, since that is what it is. It is used to illustrate at least two glossary entries, such as hypermetamorphosis and triungulin.

If an illustration does not fit into a taxonomic category, I've been putting it under the most appropriate glossary entry, for instance:

goes under leg.

I've done this because it is hard to decide where some illustrations should go in the glossary--they often illustrate more than one term. Of course, all those images could go at the top level of images in the glossary, but it will soon get too crowded, and one won't be able to find them.

I'm open to more intelligent suggestions--like anything, this method of organization has its pluses and minuses.

Glossary
Glossary belongs right there at the top. Lots of people need help with that, myself included. It is the other odds and ends that are a problem, including some others in different places, such as flies with fungus, which could be made into insects with fungus. They are worth keeping but we need a more elegant way to store them.
