Chlorotettix Leafhopper ??? Behavior ???

Chlorotettix Leafhopper ??? Behavior ???
Pigeon Swamp, Deans, Middlesex County, New Jersey, USA
September 24, 2007
The second, third and fourth shots depict some strange goings-on under the abdomen. Almost looks like something is comming out the side of the abdomen in the third shot. The preceeding and following posted shots don't show any of this, and it's clearly not part of the plant. The fifth shows liquid (honeydew?) being "shot" from the hopper's rear. I took many shots trying to capture a "ball" in flight, but it all happened in milliseconds, though at regular intervals, and this was the closest I came.

feeding
Leafhoppers take in much more liquid than they need, so the excess is passed through the gut by way of a "filter chamber" and forcibly expelled from the gut to prevent the insect from getting wet. "Sharpshooters" which feed on the most dilute sap (from xylem cells, that transport water direct from the roots) do this most forcefully, with a faint cracking noise.
