Eleodes armatus

Eleodes armatus
Algodones Dunes, Imperial County, California, USA
September 29, 2007
Size: 4cm
Got permission to collect Tenebs in the non-OHV destroyed area. What a dramatic contrast. In the protected area, Tenebs could wander around without being smashed into the ground by OHVs and were by far the most common organism with millions milling around on the ground. E armatus is characterized by the spine on all the femurs. It is extremely common in dry areas of Western AZ/CA. They show extreme size variation with some specimens being as small as 2cm and others reaching almost 6 cm. Some are slender and others are quite robust.

Interesting,
that we have only one image of this rather common species, but I'm glad you've made a start, Kojun.
