Timema

Timema
Lakeview Mountains near Hemet, Riverside County, California, USA
April 11, 2005
Size: 15 mm
Order Phasmatodea
Family Timematidae
Genus Timema
Species unknown.

Found crawling on my bedroom carpet. Thought it was an earwig at first. Captured and photographed outdoors the next day.

Awesome!
Awesome! I've never seen one looking like this before.

cool
I've never seem anything like it! Links I found http://tolweb.org/tree?group=Phasmida and here is a key I found (I'm terrible at using keys) http://www.herper.com/insects/timema.html.

keys
I'd never seen anything like it before, either. I was actually pretty excited by the find. My first phasmid!

I'm terrible at those kinds of keys also -- for one thing, you need a good microscope, which I don't have; and for another thing, you pretty much have to dissect the critter.

reminds us
of Robin's mystery creature . Are they related?

I don't think so
Timemas will hold their antennae straight out like that, but they don't have the enlarged hind legs. Also, I can't really tell -- does that creature have wings?
