Fungus Gnat (Mycetophilidae)?

Fungus Gnat (Mycetophilidae)?
Springfield, Fairfax County, Virginia, USA
April 14, 2005
Size: ~6mm
The size and elongated coxae make me think this is a fungus gnat, family Mycetophilidae, though confirmation would be appreciated.

very nice image
The information content in this image is very, very good. Care to share the lighting and lense/aperature information?

photo info
I actually extracted this fly out of a mess of weeds growing on my lawn, where it was impossible to get a clear shot, and moved it to a piece of heavy white paper for the photograph. I used a 105mm macro lens on a 2X telecoverter at f/11 with a shutter speed of 1/60 sec. I also used an electronic flash diffused with a plastic cup. I was only able to get about two decent photos before the gnat flew away.

Quite right!!
Hello Richard,
You are quite right, this is certainly Mycetophilidae!
Maybe somebody else can give you more info about genus or species, because I don't know american species!
Greetings,
Gerard Pennards

Mycetophilid
Is this Mycetophilidae sensu stricto? I recently changed the fly families in the guide around to fit the more modern classifications as used by European dipterists, but I've only learned the North American classifications so I don't know the difference between Mycetophilidae, Keroplatidae, etc.

s.str.
It certainly is Mycetophilidae s.str. It will not be easy to put a genus name on this one. Part of the needed information is in wing venation and too little is visible on this image.
