Chlaenius sericeus - male

Chlaenius sericeus - Male
Mason Farm Biological Reserve, Orange County, North Carolina, USA
September 29, 2007
Size: 14 mm
Found under a log next to a pond. Rather farther south than our previous records here. ID based on other photos in the guide, and it looks consistent with the key, description, and illustration (of head and pronotum) in Ciegler (1). Front tarsomeres 1-3 of male are dilated, have spongy underside, presumably used in mating (1), so this is a male. Another character of this species visible here is described by the Dillons (2):
  • antennae and legs pale brownish yellow, apical segments of antennae darker
Part of a Bioblitz at Mason Farm Biological Reserve.

Chlaenius sericeus
Close enough to South Carolina, I ran images and fact "14mm" through Ciegler's key & descriptions and also came up with Chlaenius sericeus as most likely. Good call also on the male gender.
