Squirrel ear tick

Squirrel ear tick
Newton, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, USA
May 29, 2007
I'm posting this despite the poor quality because it may be an underrepresented family on bugguide. There was an outbreak of ticks on my friendly local squirrels last spring. The one below is a different tick on a different squirrel, identified as probably a soft tick, a family (Argasidae) for which bugguide does not even have a page:

Seem different...
Now these ticks look different than the first. More of the hard-bodied kind? They look like Wood Ticks to me.

Maybe
Could be a wood tick. There's also a species of Ixodes called "squirrel tick". My pictures may not be good enough to tell the difference, even if there were a picture of Ixodes marxi on the internet which as far as I can tell there isn't.

Do you think they are both the same species?

....
I only have a question. Are you zooming to get these pics or are the squirrels pets ?
They can't be wild because these things are like a buzz saw with a tail!

Squirrels like me
These are tame suburban squirrels. They will eat from my hand. The tick pictures were taken from about two feet away.

Ok....
I guess I'm used to country squirrels that would be just as content to bite your face off as to look at you if you get to close or attempt to touch one.
