Explanation of Names

From Latin sternum, the breast bone and/or Greek sternon chest.

Identification

sternum noun, plural sterna - the inferior or ventral surface of a ring-like body segment. See diagram:

sternite - a ventral plate of the exoskeleton; ventral equivalents of the tergites. (From Greek sternon chest, plus ite, constituent.)
