Pupa -
looks like some kind of moth - did you find it in the ground?

I found it in my compost pile; all kinds of yard waste passed through shredder/chipper and soil mixed in.

 
I expect it dug in after the shredding
many moths pupate underground, so this may not be identifiable right now - you might try keeping it captive and see if you get an adult (which could be not till next spring).
