One of the photos shows a fat abdomen. Does that indicate it is a female?

Yes.
I'd refer to it as a "flared" abdomen, and females are certainly much more wide-bodied than the males (I am talking about wheel bugs ONLY:-) LOL! In other Reduviidae, gender differences may be less pronounced.
