Black fly - Hermetia illucens - female

Black fly - Hermetia illucens - Female
Sunnyvale, Santa Clara County, California, USA
October 6, 2007
Size: Maybe an inch long
It's a gravid female of something that looks a bit like a syrphid. It could hardly fly, and made a distinct buzzing noise while flapping around on the ground. The wings were an iridescent blue.
