Caterpillar (butterfly or moth?) - Xylophanes tersa

Caterpillar (butterfly or moth?) - Xylophanes tersa
McAllen, TX, USA, Higalgo County, Texas, USA
October 6, 2007
Size: 2.25"
There are probably 100s of butterfly species in our area (festival next weekend) and we've been working on filling our backyard with butterfly- and hummingbird-friendly plants. This caterpillar was found on the ground but near our Turks Cap plants. I plan on adding butterfly and their larva to my book collection, but in the mean time I was hoping maybe someone could identify this one. It's currently in our terrarium but I'm not sure if it needs a particular species of plant to survive. Thank you, in advance.

Tersa Sphinx Moth
brown phase of the hornworm

Thanks!
I guess hornworm = sphinx moth? We did have an ornamental pepper plant that mysteriously died recently...

Thanks for the help
