Robberfly ? - Thereva fucata - female

Robberfly ? - Thereva fucata - Female
Manteca, San Joaquin County, California, USA
October 8, 2007
Size: 3/4 "
What a weird , but handsome fly . Just when I thought I had found all the insects around here , I saw this striped fellow sunning on a Ceanothus bush . I thought it was a Robberfly , but then found a picture in my bug book of a Stilleto fly that looks a lot like him . I am not positive what it is , but it sure was cooperative with photos , thankfully . I appreciate any comments , sincerely Beth ... so glad I found a new insect ( to me ) .

Thereva fucata Loew
Nice fly, isn't it? It's a female of Thereva fucata Loew - lovin' the sun and your camera, it seems. Among the Thereva species, T. fucata is one of the latest to appear as adults. Most dipterists would agree that October is usually pretty late in the season to be out looking for stiletto flies. This fly is your reward for being a non-conformist!
