Ant with red head, trunk and black metasoma with white ring around it - Timulla vagans
Sheboygan, Sheboygan County, Wisconsin, USA
July 30, 2006
I found this ant in my yard in Sheboygan, WI last summer. I'm not sure if it's from this area because I've never seen an ant like it before or since. I was told it's a red velvet ant, but the pics of red velvet ants that I've seen are hairy and don't look like this one. It's about the size of a normal black ant from this area.

Maybe Timulla sp?
Some sort of Mutillidae, Velvet Ants. They're not actually ants, but wingless wasps (the males have wings). Be careful, they pack quite a punch if they sting you! I think it's at least in the genus Timulla, but as far as a species ID is concerned, I don't know.
