Bee Fly - Heterostylum

Bee Fly - Heterostylum
Desert Botanical Garden, Maricopa County, Arizona, USA
March 9, 2005
Size: circa 10 mm
Best resolution I have of the wing venation of this Bee Fly, previously uploaded. Heterostylum, according to Joel Kits--see comments.

Heterostylum robustum is on this list from Organ Pipe National Monument, Arizona. Perhaps that is what this is.

Bombylius
This appears to be Bombylius. The key character for distinguishing Bombylius from Systoechus or Anastoechus is the placement of the r-m crossvein, which is near the middle of the discal cell in Bombylius and near the base of the discal cell in the other genera. In this specimen it is near the middle. I tried running this through a key to Bombylius species, but there are a number of characters that would require a very clear head-on shot to use. Unless we get an expert to look at this I think we'll have to leave it at the generic level.

Thanks--Arizona diptera list.
Then Bombylius it is! The genus is certainly good enough for me.

Interesting, I see only B. major from Arizona on this list of Arizona diptera. I don't think this is B. major. Of course, that is likely to be incomplete.

oops
Much later... I see this is probably not Bombylius, but Heterostylum. The sinuous hind margin of the eye (visible on the side shot) and wide head indicate this genus rather than Bombylius, although both genera have similar wing venation.

OK, will move
Thanks, I'll move it to that genus.
