Leaf-Eating Caterpillar? - Coryphista meadii

Leaf-Eating Caterpillar? - Coryphista meadii
West Lake, Prince Edward, Ontario, Canada
October 10, 2007
Size: up to 1 inch
These caterpillars have been eating the leaves of my rose glow barberry bush since August. Unfortunately I only just noticed this the past week. (The reason I knew approximately when is because I had taken a photo of a monarch pupa in mid July when these bushes were full of leaves.) I've had these bushes for four years and this has never happened before. I have not seen these caterpillars anywhere else on our acre plus lot. They hang by a web like a spider's web.

Barberry is the perfect place to find these
Coryphista meadii - Barberry Geometer, in the guide here. but interestingly no caterpillar images. Check Wagner page 208 if you've got him. Nice addition to the guide!

I agree.
Found another image of the caterpillars in Google, and it looks nearly identical. Moving to species page for now, anyway:-)
