cremastocheilus #3 - Cremastocheilus maritimus

very rare species, only one I've ever seen, but shares the same habitat with another species of cremastocheilus on the isolated sand dune I caught this one on. unlike the others, it has black hairs covering its body and nice thin white marking all over the elytra.

determination

This is a strictly coastal species; currently "Cremastocheilus maritimus Casey" would be accurate, but will probably be a subspecies in the future. Nearly all the specimens have been collected on Marin County, CA, beaches, with a few scattered as far north as Vancouver Island. At one time it was even collected on beaches in San Diego County, but appears now to be extirpated from Southern California. Given the old San Diego records, it could still be present on northern Baja California beaches (Pacific coast), which would be a new country record--if anyone sees Cremastocheilus from beaches south of the San Francisco area, please let me know!

I don't have your email so I have to ask you this here. Do you know what species of Cremastocheilus might occur in Truckee,CA? Oh, I have seen Cremastocheilus south of the bay in the Monterey area, coastal.
