Large beetle - Ergates spiculatus

Large beetle - Ergates spiculatus
Aptos, Santa Cruz County, California, USA
September 1, 2007
Size: 3"

Ponderous borer.
I am so envious! I've never seen a live one. This is an adult "ponderous borer," Ergates spiculatus. The huge larvae bore in roots of trees. The action of the larval jaws inspired the invention of the chainsaw, by the way. Adults are sometimes attracted to lights at night.

thanks
I've either seen two of them, or the same one
twice a few days apart. Both times I found it
between two closely spaced rounds of a 30-year old
Monterey Pine that I had to have cut down because
it had pitch canker.
