Hister Beetle

Hister Beetle
Hampshire County, Massachusetts, USA
April 17, 2005
Size: ~4 mm
Found in the sandy patch of an old field near our house. There were many ant colonies and bee burrows present, but I am not sure if that will aid in identification. However, "Peterson's Guide to Beetles" (1) does say that some prey on other insects. Glancing through the book, this looks to perhaps be a species of Euspilotus, one of the more widespread in N. America.

Neato!
Very respectable image of a highly reflective, extremely convex beetle! Nice work. I'd hesitate to put a genus on it, though. There is a great website on hister beetles, I think its done at U of Wisconsin entomology department? They have amazing images of specimens, and comparing this image to those might be helpful.
